GIA SPECIAL REPORT NOTES.
This letter addresses the characteristics of the 97.23 carat tanzanite described on GIA report number 1368477742.
This tanzanite exhibits a highly saturated blue-violet coloration, which is mainly attributed to vanadium.
Tanzanite, the blue-violet gem variety of the mineral zoisite, part of the epidote family, was discovered during the 1960's a few kilometers from scenic Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, in Tanzania. It received lts variety name upon the proposal of Henry Platt of Tiffany & Co., in 1968 after its country of origin.
Since its discovery in Tanzania, tanzanite has reportedly been found in Kenya and
Pakistan too. Gem quality tanzanite is only known to originate from one deposit in the world: The
Merelani Hills deposit in Northern Tanzania, where it was first discovered.
Rarely pure blue, tanzanite almost always displays overtones of violet. Tanzanite is trichroic, meaning it shows different colors when viewed in different directions. One direction is blue, another purple, and the other brownish yellow. When found in the ground, the brownish yellow color usually dominates.
However, with gentle heating (-370'C), one can watch the blue and violet color strengthen in the stone.
The resulting color is completely stable. Legend has it that the effect of heat was first discovered when brown zoisite crystals exposed on the earth's surface were caught in a fire initiated by lightning that swept across the grass-covered Merelani Hills. The Masai herders who drove cattle in the area noticed the beautiful blue color and picked the crystals up, becoming the first tanzanite collectors.
The combination of the large size, saturated blue-violet color, high degree of transparency and appealing cut and proportions make this stone a notable tanzanite.
