TANZANITE belongs to the mineral ZOISITE, Naturally, it's Gray and brown in a rough state. Sometimes blue, pink, and green rough material is also mined in Tanzania which is the main source of the finest Tanzanite in modern times since it was discovered in 1960, it's so rare that many people believe it's even rarer than diamond. 99% currently mined in Tanzania in a very small area of mine called D-Block which is just next to the famous Mount Kilimanjaro.
Most of the TANZANITE in rough states are gray and brown, this is one of the gemstones that need heat to transform its color from gray, and brown to vivid blue, and violet-blue, after heat color is permanent and widely accepted.
Tanzanite is a hydrous calcium aluminum silicate mineral. It was named after Austrian scientist Sig-mund von Zois (1747-1819), who discovered it in the Saualpe mountains of Carinthia, Austria, which provided the mineral's first name of
'saualpite'. Tanzanite occurs in schists and gneisses and in metasomatic rocks, together with Garnet, Vesuvianite, and Actinolite. It is found occasionally in hydrothermal veins.
Normally it forms aggregates that can be lumpy, fibrous, or bladed. Tanzanite can be confused by the naked eye with the more common mineral clinozoisite.
Tanzanite (Zoisite) generally has long, prismatic, or tabular crystals that are commonly striated lengthwise. The blue variety called TANZANITE is the most valuable gemstone discovered in 1967 near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Ref book Gems of the Word.
QUALITY.
Tanzanite Quality depends on its color and clarity, most of the TANZANITE is almost clean so as a buyer and investor, you have to always look for vivid color gemstones such as Vivid blue, and vivid violetish blue and try to avoid including internally cracked gemstones.
Keep in mind TANZANITE is a soft gemstone on the Moh Scale its hardness is 6, which needs very special care while mounting in jewelry and tends to break, and chip easily.
